Route Itinerary

Day 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After registration at Machame Gate, trek through lush montane rainforest on a steady uphill trail. The path winds through dense vegetation with colobus monkeys and birdlife. Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the forest behind and enter heath and moorland zone. The trail steepens as you ascend through giant heather and volcanic rock fields. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo and Mount Meru before reaching Shira Camp.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

A crucial acclimatization day. Climb high to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp. The 'climb high, sleep low' strategy prepares your body for summit day. Views of the Western Breach are spectacular.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble with exhilarating exposure. The trail then undulates through alpine desert to Karanga Camp. Shorter hiking day for rest and acclimatization.

Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Continue ascending through alpine desert to Barafu Camp, your high camp for summit night. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky. Rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight summit push.

Day 6

Summit Day — Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Start at midnight under headlamp. The steep, switchback trail ascends through scree to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer vehicle. Drive back to Moshi or Arusha for hot showers and celebration.
