The 8 Days Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches from the northern side near the Kenya border. It is typically quieter and drier than the southern routes, making it an appealing option for trekkers seeking a less crowded climb with a steady ascent profile. The itinerary offers a unique wilderness experience before joining the summit approach to Uhuru Peak.

Day 1
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a comprehensive briefing and equipment check with your climbing guide. Overnight at Gran Melia Hotel, Mount Meru Hotel, or Chanya Lodge. Meals: Bed and Breakfast.
Day 2
Drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate for permits, then a short road trip to the Rongai Gate trailhead. Trek through corn and potato fields, climbing gently through forest areas with black and white colobus monkeys. Elevation: 1,950m to 2,600m. Hiking time: 3-4 hours.
Day 3
Begin with a morning trek steadily inclining from Simba Camp. Continue through moorland toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, leaving the main trail behind. Kikelewa Camp is your destination for the night. Elevation: 2,600m to 3,600m. Hiking time: 3-4 hours.
Day 4
A short but steep hike along a grassy slope surrounded by vast wilderness. As you exit the moorland, enter the Alpine Desert zone with a dramatically altered landscape. Camp at the jagged Mawenzi Tarn area with the rest of the day for relaxation or exploration. Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m. Hiking time: 3-4 hours.
Day 5
Spend the day hiking in the Mawenzi Tarn area with stunning landscapes of Kibo and Mawenzi. This extra day is designed for acclimatization. After exploring, head to Kibo Hut to prepare camp for summit night. Elevation: 4,330m to 4,720m. Hiking time: 1-2 hours.
Day 6
Your camp at Kibo Hut sits at the bottom of the Kibo Crater Wall. Relax for the rest of the day and prepare for the upcoming summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner before the midnight departure.
Day 7
Depart just past midnight for the most challenging part of the journey. Ascend in darkness with short, frequent breaks. Reach Stella Point (18,900ft) for stunning sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Continue to Uhuru Peak (19,341ft) — the Roof of Africa. Descend to Horombo Hut for your last dinner on the mountain. Elevation: 4,720m to 5,895m (down to 3,720m). Hiking time: 6-8 hours ascent, 4-5 hours descent.
Day 8
Final day with a long trek mostly downhill through tropical rainforest. Once at the park headquarters at Marangu Gate, collect your summit certificates. Your vehicle will drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m. Hiking time: 5-7 hours.
